The Vineyard
This sign appears in the Wine Library area of the St. Helena Public Library.
“Barney's Backyard”
Outside this window is the St. Helena Public
Library's vineyard, planted in the year 2000 by
the Napa Valley Wine Library Association.
Grafts of Petite Syrah, Zinfandel, and Carignane
from historic local vineyards were donated: special thanks to Laurie Wood
and Ernie Navone.
The vineyard commemorates the many people, immigrants whose names are unknown today,
who farmed these traditional varieties in the
St. Helena area from the 1880s until the wine industry began to change character in the 1970’s.
Named for Dr. Bernard L. Rhodes,
first president of the
Napa Valley Wine Library Association
