27th Annual Wine Seminar
To Blend or Not to Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon and the Red Bordeaux Varieties
Our annual Wine Seminar is at Silver Oak Cellars, Oakville. Moderated by Michael Silacci, winemaker for Opus One, the seminar wines, both finished and in barrel, and chosen by their winemakers to illustrate the day’s topic, are presented for discussion and tasting throughout the morning as we learn the history and diversity of blending and the philosophies of our morning's practitioners. Check-in at Silver Oak is at 9:30 am; Seminar begins at 10:00 am.
After an introduction by Michael, a presentation of four wines and a tasting of each led by its winemaker will be given in the following order:
- Chris Howell, winemaker and general manager, Cain Vineyard & Winery: the Cain Five and Cain Concept from 2015 and another vintage, to be determined
- Sally Johnson-Blum, winemaker, Pride Mountain Vineyards: 2015 Vintners Select Merlot, 2015 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2013 and 2015 Reserve Claret
- Alan Viader, winemaker, Viader Vineyards & Winery: the 2014 and 2015 Cabernet Franc and a 2014 and 2015 Cabernet Franc blend
- Nate Weis, winemaker, Silver Oak Cellars: barrel samples from three different vineyard blocks of 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon and a unique blend of the three
Following the seminar, an al fresco four-course lunch that includes carefully paired wines from Silver Oak and Twomey and overseen by Silver Oak chef, Dominic Orsini, is served on the terrace adjacent to the seminar.
The Wine Seminar is $195 for members and their guests and $210 for non-members.
